Cable tray basics

What cable tray systems do

A cable tray supports insulated electrical cables and keeps them organized along a defined routing path. Compared with loose cable installation, a cable tray system improves maintenance access, cable separation, heat dissipation and installation consistency.

Common cable tray types

  • Ladder cable tray / cable ladder: suitable for heavy power cables, ventilation and long support spans.
  • Perforated cable tray: suitable for organized cable routing with ventilation, fixing points and optional covers.
  • Solid-bottom tray: used when continuous base support or additional cable protection is required.
  • Metal cable trunking: enclosed cable management for protection, service separation and clean appearance.

Materials and finishes

Common options include mild steel, galvanized steel and stainless steel. Coating methods may include pre-galvanized steel, hot-dip galvanizing after fabrication or powder coating. The right choice depends on indoor or outdoor use, corrosion risk, cable load, support span and project budget.

Standards in cable tray specifications

International project documents may mention standards for different parts of the cable tray requirement. IEC 61537 or EN 61537 may be used for cable tray and cable ladder systems. US-oriented documents may refer to NEMA cable tray standards. Coating requirements may be specified separately with ASTM A123/A123M, ASTM A653/A653M, ISO 1461 or JIS standards.
